Use them for a phone plan, broadband installation, loyalty offer or vehicle appointment.
01
Does this product work at my exact home, workplace or regular route—not only in the postcode?
02
What is the complete monthly and upfront cost after promotions, installation and equipment?
03
Is there a commitment period, and what would leaving or moving home cost today?
04
Which document, payment method or loyalty card is actually required for the advertised price?
05
What proof will I keep if installation, billing, cancellation or a refund goes wrong?
01 · MOBILE PROVIDERS
Check mobile coverage where you will use it.
Portugal has four mobile networks: MEO, NOS, Vodafone and DIGI. There are also lower-cost brands and existing NOWO arrangements. Test coverage inside the home and along your regular routes before comparing plans.
MEO · UZO
MEO network
Services
Mobile · fibre · TV · fixed voice
May suit
Broad national coverage and conventional bundles, with UZO as the simpler low-cost brand.
Check before choosing
Compare MEO and UZO separately. Test both fixed and mobile coverage at the exact address.
NOS · WOO
NOS network
Services
Mobile · fibre/cable · TV · fixed voice
May suit
Full bundles and a large retail footprint, with WOO offering app-led mobile and internet plans.
Check before choosing
Ask which fixed technology reaches the building and which router or mesh equipment is included.
Vodafone · Amigo
Vodafone network
Services
Mobile · fibre · TV · fixed voice
May suit
Full-service mobile and home packages, with Amigo positioned as the simpler low-cost offer.
Check before choosing
Do not assume a Vodafone fibre area means every apartment in the street is ready for installation.
DIGI · NOWO
DIGI network · NOWO fixed footprint
Services
Mobile · fibre · fixed 5G · TV/voice in covered areas
May suit
Shorter-commitment, modular offers where DIGI coverage is available; NOWO is now part of the DIGI group.
Check before choosing
DIGI is still expanding. Existing NOWO fixed and mobile arrangements are not necessarily the same product or network.
WHAT YOU WILL USUALLY NEED
Contract mobile
Passport, Citizen Card or accepted identity document
Portuguese NIF for a normal post-paid contract
Portuguese address and contact email
IBAN only if choosing direct debit
The contract summary before you accept
Prepaid can work well when you first arrive because you can test coverage without a fixed commitment.
KEEPING YOUR NUMBER
How to keep a record of the transfer
Find the 12-digit CVP portability code on the bill, contract or customer area
Keep the old service active until the port is confirmed
Check whether the phone supports the operator’s bands, 5G and eSIM
Save the requested transfer date and any temporary number
Confirm voicemail, banking SMS and two-factor codes afterwards
Do not cancel the old mobile number first unless the receiving operator explicitly tells you to.
02 · HOME INTERNET
Confirm whether fibre reaches your home.
A street can have fibre even when a particular building does not. Check the full address with more than one operator, confirm the connection type in writing and read the speeds in the contract summary.
01
FTTH fibre
Usually the strongest option for stable work, multiple users and uploads. Confirm installation access, router position and whether the advertised speed is symmetrical.
02
Cable or mixed network
Can perform well but may have different upload speeds or neighbourhood contention. Read the minimum, normally available and maximum speeds.
03
Fixed 4G / 5G
Useful where wired coverage is weak or while waiting for installation. Test indoor signal, data-management rules, router ownership and the evening speed.
04
Rural alternatives
Local wireless and satellite can fill a gap. Check latency, data policy, installation view, equipment cost and what happens during a fault.
CONTRACT CHECKLIST
Read these terms before you agree.
Monthly total
Price now, price after the promotion and every add-on included in the verbal quote.
Commitment
Exact end date, benefits given for accepting it and the current early-exit calculation.
Installation
Activation charge, technician visit, landlord or condominium access and expected date.
Equipment
Router, TV box or mesh ownership; replacement charges; and the return method after cancellation.
Moving home
Whether the old commitment continues, restarts or can be ended when equivalent service is unavailable.
Speed
Contracted fixed-line speed and the difference between line performance and Wi-Fi inside the home.
03 · GROCERY CHAINS
Compare the price of your usual shopping.
Prices depend on the products and quantities you buy, as well as the shops close enough to use every week. Some Portuguese promotions require a loyalty card, a minimum spend or credit that can only be used later.
01
Hypermarket to neighbourhood
Continente · Modelo · Bom Dia
Large range, strong private label, delivery in supported areas and Cartão Continente promotions.
WATCH
A discount credited to the card is not the same as an immediate cash saving. Read the expiry and partner conditions.
02
Neighbourhood supermarket
Pingo Doce
Broad mainland and Madeira presence, fresh-food counters, prepared meals and regular basket promotions.
WATCH
Many promotions depend on basket thresholds or Poupa Mais conditions. Compare the final receipt, not the headline.
03
Discount supermarket
Lidl · Aldi
Smaller range, high private-label share, bakery and rotating non-food lines. Both are strongest on mainland Portugal.
WATCH
A smaller range can make a shop faster, but a second store may be needed for specialist or familiar international products.
04
Large supermarket
Mercadona
Private-label-led stores with prepared food and an expanding mainland network, currently strongest in the North and Centre.
WATCH
It is not yet a nationwide option. Confirm the actual store map before using it as part of a location decision.
05
Hypermarket to convenience
Auchan · My Auchan · Minipreço
A mix of large stores, local formats and a network still changing as former Minipreço stores are integrated.
WATCH
Store name, range and loyalty arrangements can differ while local formats change.
06
Regional, rural and franchise-led
Intermarché · E.Leclerc · Froiz · local groups
Often especially important outside the largest cities, alongside Meu Super, Amanhecer, Coviran, Sol*Mar and independent shops.
WATCH
Portugal is local. The most useful weekly shop may be a town market and two smaller stores, not one national chain.
COMPARE YOUR LOCAL SHOPS
Price a basket you actually buy.
01
Price 15 things you genuinely buy, using the unit price per kilogram, litre or item.
02
Separate immediate savings from loyalty credit, coupons and future-spend conditions.
03
Include the municipal market, butcher, fishmonger, bakery and local produce shop.
04
Take reusable bags. Supermarket carrier bags are charged, and small produce bags may follow different rules.
05
Check island and rural availability before choosing a home around a favourite mainland chain.
04 · PETROL & DIESEL
Read the pump before the price board.
Fuel prices are free to vary by brand and location. Galp, BP, Repsol, Moeve, PRIO and supermarket or independent forecourts are common, but the nearest network depends on the region.
GASOLINA
Petrol
Gasolina 95 is the common 95-octane petrol. Gasolina 98 is higher octane. “Simples” and “aditivada” describe the base/additive offer—not what your engine requires.
GASÓLEO
Diesel
Gasóleo means diesel. Check whether the vehicle requires standard diesel and never choose by nozzle colour alone; colours can differ by forecourt.
GPL AUTO
LPG and other fuels
GPL Auto, AdBlue and electric charging are separate products. Confirm the vehicle, connector and tank requirements before relying on a station shown on a general map.
THE FINAL PRICE
Loyalty is not comparison
A cents-per-litre coupon may require a supermarket basket or later spend. Compare the posted pump total after the discount against a lower-priced independent station.
At the station
Check the fuel-door label or manual before the first fill.
Some pumps require payment or a card pre-authorisation before fuelling.
Motorway stations are convenient; compare nearby off-motorway prices when practical.
Keep the receipt for a hire car, business expense or any suspected fuel-quality problem.
For current comparison, search by municipality and fuel—not by national average alone.
The registration anniversary controls the deadline.
A Portuguese periodic inspection is completed at an authorised Centro de Inspeção Técnica de Veículos (CITV). Any person may present the vehicle with the required original documents; the owner does not normally have to drive it in.
PRIVATE PASSENGER CAR4 · 2 · 1
First inspection at four years, then every two years until eight years old, then every year.
BOOKING WINDOW3 months
You may inspect during the three months before the day and month of first registration. Inspecting early does not change the normal anniversary.
2026 BASE FEE€30.46
Plus applicable VAT for a light vehicle—€37.47 at the 23% mainland rate. A normal reinspection base fee is €7.64 plus VAT.

WHAT TO TAKE & CHECK
A ten-minute check can prevent a failed visit.
From 1 March 2026, an unresolved manufacturer safety recall can also cause the vehicle to fail inspection. Check the VIN with the manufacturer before the appointment.
APPROVED
Keep the inspection sheet with the vehicle.
A small Type 1 defect may be recorded without immediate rejection, but it should still be corrected. An uncorrected defect can become more serious at the next check.
REJECTED
Read the restrictions before driving away.
The normal correction and reinspection period is 30 days; it can reduce to 15 days after defects were not corrected in time. Serious Type 2 or dangerous Type 3 defects can restrict how the vehicle may be used.
SAME CENTRE
Return with the corrected vehicle and sheet.
Using the same centre within the permitted period preserves the reinspection process. Going elsewhere or missing the deadline can mean paying for a new full inspection.
06 · WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG
Keep the records you need for a complaint.
Write a short timeline and keep the contract or receipt, what the company promised, what happened and the remedy you are asking for.
01
Write to the provider
Use a channel that creates a reference number. Attach only the relevant pages and state the correction, cancellation, refund or repair you want.
02
Keep the proof
Save the contract summary, order, installation date, bills, payment receipt, cancellation request, equipment-return receipt and every case number.
03
Use the complaints book
Portugal’s Livro de Reclamações exists in physical and electronic form for consumer-facing businesses. Choose the correct company and regulator.
04
Escalate to the relevant regulator
ANACOM regulates communications; ERSE covers energy and fuels; vehicle-inspection centres operate under the transport and inspection framework.
